SuDS Planter Installed at Wellhouse Hub

SuDS Planter Installed at Wellhouse Hub

To showcase options for retrofit sustainable drainage interventions in the local community, a sustainable drainage system (SuDS) planter has been installed at Wellhouse Hub in the east end of Glasgow.

SuDS planters are a type of raingarden designed to manage rainwater run-off from roofs. They use planted areas and the storage volume within the planter to capture and slow down (attenuate) rainfall, which allows the plants to use some of the rainfall, before it gets into the below-ground drainage network.

This helps to reduce flood risk for the local community and communities downstream, improve local water quality by filtering out pollutants and reducing the likelihood of sewer overflow spills, provides a home for biodiversity, and can improve health and wellbeing by bringing vegetation into the urban environment.

The planter, provided by www.sudsplanter.com, is part of a range of options being considered by Scottish Water and Glasgow City Council to reduce flood risk for the area, and a community engagement event organised by Wellhouse Housing Association was held at Wellhouse Hub on 10 June 2022, to gather feedback to inform next steps.
